Can These Parental Relationships Heal?
By Candace van Dell.
Everyday I receive emails about no contact. Can the relationship with my parent ever change, heal, be different? This is very situational. This all depends on THEIR desire to see themselves, but more so to see YOU differently. If you were the scapegoat, or any child of a narcissistic or emotionally immature family, you were NOT SEEN for you authentic self. You were seen as the role they put you in to maintain their authority and power.
It has been said many times that people with true NPD can not change but people with symptoms can. In my experience the road to this type of shift is going to have to start with you. This is a very difficult road because it is all about YOU. Trust what you now know about these family dynamics to truly trust in your own GOODNESS enough to follow your own instincts and guidance back to your own autonomy.
This means you are going to have to separate from those deep needs to belong to them for awhile. You are going to have to deal with the guilt of listening to your own needs. You are going to be up against people blaming you and talking wrongfully about you when you are not present or when you are. You will need to do the inner child work by connecting with your hurt one inside and letting them know that YOU’VE GOT THEM NOW. This reparenting process is absolutely mandatory to be able to not only see your parents for who they are, shortcomings and all, and ultimately being able to OWN WHO YOU TRULY ARE, TOO.
This means you will finally see that YOU were never the problem. This is the most difficult step for any of my clients. For many years you were looking for them to finally validate that you are worthy of their love, mirroring and support. Your inner child will learn this by being worthy of YOUR LOVE, MIRRORING AND SUPPORT. When I teach this to my clients they have a massive shift. You must morn the parent you did not get and never will. You then have the choice to accept them as they are. To know what truly happened and live with the peace in your heart that you were a victim to emotionally immature parents. With your new emotional intelligence, you will no longer be confused. You will rise up to your potential because you will no longer need anyone to CONFIRM YOU.
At this stage your boundaries are restored and you get to make the choice if you feel your original family can see you and treat you like the adult you have become. If so, there is absolutely a chance to heal, to reconnect and to have a different connection with them. Always maintaining your emotional autonomy because you no longer look for or need to get it from a place it never was…..them.
