ReThink Chronic Anxiety & Insomnia: How to Stop the Night-Watch and Start Seeing What Is

By iKE ALLEN, Founder of AVAIYA and Creator of ReThink & Somatic ReThink™

I still remember back when I would spend many of my nights staring at the ceiling while the rest of the world was sleeping. My mind was running a grueling marathon.

I would lie awake at 3:00 AM, replaying conversations from the past, anticipating disasters in the future, and trying to solve everyone else’s problems before the sun came up.

I thought my anxiety was a form of love. I believed that if I just worried enough about the people in my life, I could somehow protect them from pain and keep my world secure.

But eventually, the sheer physical and mental exhaustion of never truly resting caused that illusion to break.

I realized I wasn’t being a loving protector; I was just terrified of surrendering control. I could continue looking through the eyes of the anxious night-watchman—who believes the world will literally stop spinning if he goes to sleep—or I could look through the eyes of awareness.

I chose awareness.

When you look through the eyes of awareness, you realize a profound, indisputable truth: Your anxiety does not change reality, and your exhaustion does not keep anyone safe.

This ReThink tool is for the person who is running on empty, whose mind turns into a loud, terrifying war room the exact second their head hits the pillow.

The Night-Watch Glitch

When you experience a life where you feel overly responsible for others, your brain learns a very specific survival strategy: If I drop my guard and actually rest, a crisis will happen and I won’t be ready for it. I must stay awake and figure everything out.

This is the “Night-Watch Glitch.” Your brain has falsely linked chronic anxiety and wakefulness to physical and emotional survival.

You end up lying in the dark rejecting the present moment because you are trying to mentally manage a future that hasn’t arrived. You are subconsciously saying, “If I surrender to sleep, I am abandoning my post, and everything will fall apart.”

Today, we’re going to ReThink that biological reflex.

The part of enlightenment that’s actually so incredibly liberating isn’t about achieving a mystical, floating state of consciousness. It’s finally seeing things exactly as they are—accepting that it is 3:00 AM and there is absolutely nothing you can do right now—without layering your own story of impending doom on top of it.

Step 1: The Somatic Pause (Clearing the Static)

You cannot logic your way into deep sleep if your body is flooded with cortisol and adrenaline, fully convinced a predator is in the room. The Somatic Pause gets your nervous system quiet enough so that your brain can drop the night-watch and do the heavy lifting of ReThinking the situation.

  • The Worry Catch: The exact second you notice yourself spiraling in bed—mentally drafting a text message you need to send tomorrow, agonizing over a loved one’s choices, or feeling your chest tighten with vague dread—freeze. Catch the thought: “I am trying to control tomorrow by sacrificing my rest today.”
  • The Reality Anchor: Insomnia traps us entirely in an imagined, chaotic future. We need to physically drop the body into the heavy, static present. Lie flat on your back. Focus entirely on the physical weight of your body pressing into the mattress. Start at your heels, then your hips, then your shoulders. Imagine gravity pulling you down like a heavy stone. Take a deep, slow breath in, and as you exhale, say out loud: “The world does not need me right now. It is safe to put my mind down.” You are signaling to your vagus nerve that the shift is over.

Step 2: The ReThink (Rewiring the Mind)

Now that the physical static is cleared, it’s time to enter The ReThink Shift. We have to challenge your ideas about worry and control by putting them on trial.

The Core Concept: Awakening is Seeing What Is. Fear wants you to believe that your anxiety is highly productive (“If I figure out the solution tonight, tomorrow will be safe”). Grounded reality relies on radical presence (“It is the middle of the night, my only job is to breathe, and I am entirely safe”). We have to ReThink sleep not as an indulgence you have to earn, but as a biological surrender to what is. Life becomes wonderful not because you solved every problem, but because you finally give yourself permission to rest amidst the unresolved.

The Old Story: “If I stop worrying and actually fall asleep, I am being irresponsible. I must stay on high alert so I can manage everything and keep us safe.”

The New Reality: “Before enlightenment, the world spins without me. After enlightenment, the world spins without me. I am dropping the illusion that my worry prevents disaster. I am choosing to surrender to rest.”

Your Turn: Identify your biggest “insomnia/anxiety” trigger right now (e.g., staring at the ceiling thinking about your partner’s bad habits, worrying about a conversation you have to have tomorrow, feeling a sudden wave of panic when the house gets quiet).

  • Line 1 (My Anxiety Trigger): ___________________________________________________________________
  • Line 2 (The “I Must Solve This Right Now” Story My Brain Made Up): ___________________________________________________________________
  • Line 3 (The Grounded Reality of What Actually Is – Right Here in This Bed): ___________________________________________________________________

Finding the Magic in the Mundane

The next time you catch yourself trying to transcend the vulnerability of sleep by obsessively worrying, force your brain to look closely and identify reality.

Think of a recent night where you lost hours of sleep agonizing over a situation that ended up working itself out entirely without your intervention. How much of your vital energy did you waste trying to manage an illusion?

Write an “Awakening Mantra” to keep handy on your nightstand when the frantic urge to worry wakes you up. (e.g., “The world will survive my rest,” or “There is nothing to fix at 3 AM.”)

A Final Thought: Awakening to What Is

You aren’t trying to generate a reality where the future is perfectly guaranteed anymore.

The reality is, nothing really changes in the outer world. Tomorrow will still have its challenges. The people you love will still have to face their own messy paths. You will wake up and there will still be wood to chop and water to carry.

But when you finally drop the heavy backpack full of catastrophic “what-ifs” and the exhausting demand that you must be the universe’s night-watchman, you realize how incredibly wonderful it is to simply close your eyes.

The suffering vanishes. The ordinary becomes deeply extraordinary. Your capacity to pause, regulate your nervous system, and aggressively challenge the story that “worry keeps me safe” is what actually brings you peace.

I’ll Meet You Where You Are.

Keep ReThinking,
