ReThink Stress: How to Lower Your Blood Pressure and Start Seeing What Is

By iKE ALLEN, Founder of AVAIYA and Creator of ReThink & Somatic ReThink™

I used to think my codependency was just an emotional issue. I thought if I could just figure out the right mindset or read the right spiritual texts, I would finally feel peaceful.

But I was entirely ignoring what was happening from the neck down.

My heart was constantly racing. My jaw was locked tight. My blood pressure was high, and my cortisol levels were through the roof. I chased this spiritual fantasy that enlightenment was a state of mind, completely missing the fact that my physical body was trapped in a 24/7 war zone of my own making.

I thought I was being a caring, sensitive person by absorbing everyone else’s chaos. But eventually, the sheer physical exhaustion of keeping my nervous system on permanent high alert caused my health—and that illusion—to break.

I realized I couldn’t just think my way to peace if my body still believed it was in mortal danger every time someone else had a bad day. I could continue looking through the eyes of the panic-stricken rescuer, or I could look through the eyes of awareness.

I chose awareness.

When you look through the eyes of awareness, you realize a profound, indisputable truth: Someone else’s crisis does not require a physiological emergency response from your body.

This ReThink tool is for the person whose body is keeping the score. If you are exhausted, stressed out, and physically burning out from managing other people’s realities, it’s time to stop fighting.

The Hyper-Vigilance Glitch

When you experience chaotic, unpredictable, or unsafe environments, your physical body learns a very specific survival strategy: If I stay hyper-vigilant, pump my system full of adrenaline, and prepare for the worst, I can react fast enough to keep myself safe.

This is the “Hyper-Vigilance Glitch.” Your brain has falsely linked other people’s emotional states to physical life-or-death threats.

When your partner gets annoyed, or a friend pulls away, your amygdala sounds the alarm. Your heart rate spikes, your blood vessels constrict (driving up your blood pressure), and your digestion stops. You end up walking around rejecting the present moment because your physical body is reacting to a tiger that isn’t actually in the room.

Today, we’re going to ReThink that biological reflex.

The part of enlightenment that’s actually so incredibly wonderful isn’t about ignoring your body. It’s finally seeing things exactly as they are—recognizing that a difficult conversation is just a conversation, not a predator—and allowing your nervous system to return to baseline.

Step 1: The Somatic Pause (Clearing the Static)

You absolutely cannot logic your way out of high blood pressure and stress if your body is flooded with cortisol. The Somatic Pause—the core of Somatic ReThink™—is mandatory here. It manually overrides your fight-or-flight response so your brain can actually do the heavy lifting of ReThinking the situation.

  • The Adrenaline Catch: The exact second you notice your physiology hijacking you—your chest tightening, your breath getting shallow, your heart pounding because someone else is upset—freeze. Catch the thought: “My body is treating their mood like a physical threat, but I am actually safe.”
  • The Reality Anchor: We need to aggressively signal the vagus nerve to lower your heart rate and dilate your blood vessels. Sit down. Take a “physiological sigh”: take one deep breath in through your nose, then immediately take a second, sharp sip of air to fill your lungs completely. Then, exhale slowly through your mouth for as long as you possibly can. Do this three times. As you finish the last long exhale, say out loud: “This is their emergency, not mine. My body can rest.”

Step 2: The ReThink (Rewiring the Mind)

Now that the physical static is cleared and your heart rate has dropped, it’s time to enter The ReThink Shift. We have to challenge your body’s false alarms by putting them on trial.

The Core Concept: Awakening is Seeing What Is. Fear wants your body to believe that you must be physically mobilized to fix the problem (“If I don’t stay on high alert, everything will crash”). Grounded reality relies on radical physical presence (“They are upset, but there is no physical danger in this room”). We have to ReThink stress not as the “cost of caring,” but as a biological misunderstanding. Life becomes wonderful not because stressful things stop happening, but because your body stops treating every inconvenience like a threat to your survival.

The Old Story: “Someone is upset or something is out of control. My body must tense up, stay awake, and flood with adrenaline so I can fix it and survive.”

The New Reality: “Before enlightenment, my body panicked. After enlightenment, my body is calm. I am dropping the illusion that their chaos is my physical emergency. I am choosing to let my nervous system rest in this exact moment.”

Your Turn: Identify your biggest “hyper-vigilance” trigger right now (e.g., hearing a specific tone in your partner’s voice, receiving an unexpected text, feeling the urge to fix a problem before it happens).

  • Line 1 (My Physical Stress Trigger): ___________________________________________________________________
  • Line 2 (The “This is a Life-or-Death Emergency” Story My Brain Made Up): ___________________________________________________________________
  • Line 3 (The Grounded Reality of What Actually Is – I Am Physically Safe): ___________________________________________________________________

Finding the Magic in the Mundane

The next time you catch your blood pressure rising and your chest tightening over someone else’s reality, force your brain to look closely and identify actual reality.

Think of a recent time when your body was absolutely exhausted, but you stayed awake, stressed, and spinning over a problem that wasn’t even yours to solve. How much of your physical health did you sacrifice to an illusion?

Write an “Awakening Mantra” to keep handy when the frantic, physical urge to panic takes over. (e.g., “Their chaos is not my emergency,” or “My body is allowed to rest while they figure it out.”)

A Final Thought: Awakening to What Is

You aren’t trying to generate a reality where nothing stressful ever happens anymore.

The reality is, nothing really changes in the outer world. People are still going to have crises. The world will still be loud and unpredictable. There will always be a reason to panic if you go looking for one.

But when you finally drop the heavy backpack full of false alarms, and stop demanding that your physical body carry the weight of everyone else’s emotional weather, you realize how incredibly wonderful it is to simply inhabit a calm body.

The suffering vanishes. The ordinary becomes deeply extraordinary. Your capacity to pause, regulate your breath, lower your own blood pressure, and aggressively challenge the story that “this is an emergency” is what actually brings you peace.

I’ll Meet You Where You Are.
