Reclaiming My Birthday: How Breaking Through Codependency Changed Everything

By Susan Ball, Unapologetically You Mentor & Coach.

For years, my birthday was a day filled with unmet expectations, loneliness, and sadness. I always hoped someone would make it special, yearning for that extra attention and love to fill the void inside me. Every year, I placed the responsibility for my happiness on others, especially my romantic partners, believing they would finally give me the celebration I deserved. But instead of joy, I was left disappointed time and time again.

The pattern was clear—I was trapped in codependency, waiting for external validation and someone else to take charge of making me feel valued. I felt powerless over my own happiness, especially on my birthday, the one day I thought should revolve around me. And then came the abuser.

Like many abusers, he promised to give me everything I wanted. He painted a beautiful picture of a birthday celebration that would outshine all others, telling me I finally had someone who got me, who would shower me with love and attention. I was convinced that this time would be different, that my birthday would finally be special. But as is often the case in toxic relationships, that promise was a lie.

Instead of the dream birthday I imagined, he turned it into a nightmare—a day of violence, manipulation, and control. The day that should have been a celebration of my life became a painful memory of trauma and abuse. The special day I hoped for wasn’t just ruined—it was weaponized against me. My abuser used the occasion to remind me of my “place,” to break me down when I expected to be built up.

It was in the aftermath of that horrific birthday that something inside me shifted. I realized that my codependency—the need for someone else to define my worth and happiness—was at the core of the pain I felt. I had given away my power, waiting for others to make me feel special instead of claiming that for myself. It was a painful lesson, but it was also a turning point.

I decided to take my birthday back.

I understood that no one could give me the joy and celebration I was seeking but myself. My birthday became a symbol of my reclaiming control over my life, my happiness, and my worth. I no longer waited for someone else to tell me I was worth celebrating. Instead, I became the one who planned the biggest, boldest, most joyful celebrations of me.

Now, my birthdays are massive celebrations of who I am. I gather friends, create experiences that light me up, and shower myself with the love and care I once waited for others to give. I set my own standards for what brings me joy, and I refuse to settle for anything less. Breaking free from my codependency allowed me to see that I didn’t need anyone else to make my day (or my life) special—I could do that for myself.

Today, each birthday is a reminder of my strength, my independence, and my choice to love myself unapologetically. I celebrate not just another year of life, but another year of reclaiming my power.

Breaking through codependency didn’t just change my birthdays; it changed everything. And the best part? I never feel lonely or disappointed on my birthday anymore, because I know that I am enough to make it the celebration I always dreamed of.
