ReThink Identity: How to Stop Disappearing and Start Seeing “What Is”

By iKE ALLEN, Founder of AVAIYA and Creator of ReThink & Somatic ReThink™

I used to believe that being deeply “spiritual” meant being entirely selfless. I chased this fantasy of having zero ego, believing that if I was truly enlightened, I would simply flow like water into whatever shape the people around me needed.

I thought that having no strong preferences, no demands, and no rigid boundaries made me a peaceful, highly evolved person.

If you asked me what I wanted to do, eat, or be, my default answer was almost always, “Whatever you want.”

But as the exhaustion set in, my journey into true awareness forced me to face a harsh reality: I wasn’t being “selfless.” I was actively erasing myself.

I realized I could continue looking through the eyes of the chameleon—constantly shapeshifting to blend into the background so I wouldn’t cause a ripple—or I could look through the eyes of awareness.

I chose awareness.

When you look through the eyes of awareness, you realize a profound, indisputable truth: True awakening isn’t becoming a blank slate for other people to write on. It is discovering the undeniable reality of who you actually are.

This ReThink tool is for the person who has spent so much time focusing on everyone else’s needs that if someone asks, “What do you want?”, your mind goes completely blank.

The Erasure Glitch

When you grow up in an environment where your needs were treated as a burden, or where standing out meant getting targeted, your brain learns a very specific survival strategy: If I have no needs, no preferences, and take up no space, I will not be a target, and I will be safe.

This is the “Erasure Glitch.” Your brain has falsely linked having a distinct identity to being abandoned or attacked.

You end up walking around rejecting the present moment because you are terrified to actually occupy it. You are subconsciously saying, “If I state a preference or claim a space, I will disrupt the peace, so I must disappear.”

Today, we’re going to ReThink that protective reflex.

The part of enlightenment that’s actually so incredibly liberating isn’t about fading into the universe. It’s finally seeing things exactly as they are—accepting that you are a distinct human being with your own unique desires, quirks, and truths—without layering your own story of “I am a burden” on top of it.

Step 1: The Somatic Pause (Clearing the Static)

You cannot logic your way back into your own identity if your body is in a full freeze response, terrified that having an opinion is going to cause a disaster. The Somatic Pause gets your nervous system quiet enough so that your brain can drop the invisibility cloak and do the heavy lifting of ReThinking the situation.

  • The Chameleon Catch: The exact second you notice yourself fading out—feeling a wave of panic when someone asks for your opinion, defaulting to “I don’t care,” or secretly abandoning a hobby because your partner doesn’t like it—freeze. Catch the thought: “I am trying to escape reality by erasing myself because I falsely believe my existence is an inconvenience.”
  • The Reality Anchor: The loss of identity shrinks our physical presence. We pull our shoulders in and try to take up as little space as possible. We need to physically expand back into reality. Stand up or sit up very straight. Place your hands on the sides of your ribcage. Take a deep, slow breath in, and aggressively push your ribs out against your hands. Expand. Take up space. As you exhale, say out loud: “I am here. I take up space, and that is a fact.” You are signaling to your vagus nerve that it is safe to exist in three dimensions.

Step 2: The ReThink (Rewiring the Mind)

Now that the physical static is cleared, it’s time to enter The ReThink Shift. We have to challenge your ideas about “selflessness” by putting them on trial.

The Core Concept: Awakening is Seeing What Is. Fear wants you to believe that if you reveal who you really are, you will be rejected and left alone (“If I tell them I hate this restaurant, I will ruin the night”). Grounded reality relies on radical presence (“I prefer different food, that is a neutral fact, and I am entirely safe”). We have to ReThink identity not as something you sacrifice to keep the peace, but as the only vehicle you have to experience this life. Life becomes wonderful not because you perfectly mirror everyone else, but because you finally arrive in your own skin.

The Old Story: “If I have strong preferences, I am difficult and unlovable. It is safer to just become whatever the people around me need me to be.”

The New Reality: “Before enlightenment, I am me. After enlightenment, I am me. I am dropping the illusion that my erasure is an act of love. I am choosing to boldly discover what I actually like, want, and feel.”

Your Turn: Identify your biggest “erasure” trigger right now (e.g., someone asks what movie you want to watch and you panic, you want to take an art class but feel guilty spending time away from your family, you realize you only listen to the music your partner likes).

  • Line 1 (My Erasure Trigger): ___________________________________________________________________
  • Line 2 (The “I Must Disappear to Keep the Peace” Story My Brain Made Up): ___________________________________________________________________
  • Line 3 (The Grounded Reality of What Actually Is): ___________________________________________________________________

Finding the Magic in the Mundane

The next time you catch yourself trying to transcend a situation by becoming invisible, force your brain to look closely and identify your actual reality.

Think of a recent time when you gave away a tiny piece of yourself—a preference, a desire, an opinion—just to make a situation “easier.” How much of your life have you missed out on because you were busy being a mirror instead of a person?

Write an “Awakening Mantra” to keep handy when the frantic urge to disappear takes over. (e.g., “I am not a mirror, I am a masterpiece,” or “My preferences are proof that I am alive.”)

A Final Thought: Awakening to What Is

You aren’t trying to generate a reality where you seamlessly blend into the wallpaper anymore.

The reality is, nothing really changes in the outer world. You are still going to have moments where your desires clash with someone else’s. You will have to negotiate, compromise, and sometimes sit in the mild discomfort of just being different.

But when you finally drop the heavy backpack full of everyone else’s personalities and the exhausting demand that you must be “easy” at all costs, you realize how incredibly wonderful it is to simply inhabit your own life.

The suffering vanishes. The ordinary becomes deeply extraordinary. Your capacity to pause, regulate your body, and aggressively challenge the story that “your identity is a burden” is what actually brings you peace.

I’ll Meet You Where You Are.
