ReThink Emotions: How to Stop Numbing and Start Seeing What Is

By iKE ALLEN, Founder of AVAIYA and Creator of ReThink & Somatic ReThink™

I used to think that being truly “awake” meant being perfectly stoic. I chased this spiritual fantasy of being “high vibe” all the time, believing that if I was truly enlightened, I would never feel angry, sad, or disappointed again.

I thought suppressing my negative emotions was keeping the peace and protecting the people I loved. But eventually, the sheer exhaustion of pretending everything was “fine” caused that illusion to break.

And when it broke, it broke everything. My marriage fell apart. My career crumbled. The perfectly curated life I had tried so desperately to hold together completely collapsed.

But looking back, I now see that sometimes, that is exactly what needs to happen. Sometimes, the fragile structures we build on top of our suppressed truths have to burn to the ground before we can gain the profound awareness needed to actually see what is.

I realized I wasn’t enlightened; I was just completely disconnected from my own body. I could continue looking through the eyes of the peacekeeper—who constantly swallows their truth to avoid rocking the boat—or I could look through the eyes of awareness.

I chose awareness.

When you look through the eyes of awareness, you realize a profound, indisputable truth: Your emotions are not dangerous. They are just data.

This ReThink tool is for the person who is exhausted from living as a blank slate, constantly defaulting to “I don’t know” or “I don’t care” when asked what they actually want or feel.

The Numbing Glitch

When you grow up in an environment where your feelings are ignored, mocked, or punished—or where someone else’s emotions take up all the oxygen in the room—your brain learns a very specific survival strategy: If I just shut off my own internal compass and feel nothing, I won’t cause any conflict, and I will be safe.

This is the “Numbing Glitch.” Your brain has falsely linked the expression of your own emotions to chaos and danger.

You end up walking around rejecting the present moment because you are terrified of what happens if you actually feel it. You are subconsciously saying, “If I express anger or sadness, I will destroy this relationship, so I must become invisible.”

Today, we’re going to ReThink that protective reflex.

The part of enlightenment that’s actually so incredibly liberating isn’t about transcending human emotion. It’s finally seeing things exactly as they are—allowing the full spectrum of your human experience to simply flow through you—without layering your own story of “this feeling is bad and wrong” on top of it.

Step 1: The Somatic Pause (Clearing the Static)

You cannot logic your way into feeling your feelings if your body is in full freeze response, terrified that expressing yourself will cause an explosion. The Somatic Pause gets your nervous system quiet enough so that your brain can drop the numbness and do the heavy lifting of ReThinking the situation.

  • The Suppression Catch: The exact second you notice yourself swallowing your words—feeling that tightness in your throat, defaulting to “I’m fine,” or aggressively trying to think positive thoughts to escape a negative emotion—freeze. Catch the thought: “I am trying to escape reality by going numb because I think my feelings are a threat.”
  • The Reality Anchor: Numbing disconnects us entirely from our physical bodies so we can float safely in our heads. We need to physically drop back in. Place one hand on your belly and one hand on your chest. Take a deep, slow breath in, intentionally expanding your stomach against your hand. As you exhale, say out loud: “I am allowed to be fully human. My feelings will not destroy this room.” You are signaling to your vagus nerve that it is safe to occupy your own internal landscape.

Step 2: The ReThink (Rewiring the Mind)

Now that the physical static is cleared, it’s time to enter The ReThink Shift. We have to challenge your ideas about emotional safety by putting them on trial.

The Core Concept: Awakening is Seeing What Is. Fear wants you to believe that if you let your true emotions out, the world will end (“If I tell them I’m angry, they will abandon me”). Grounded reality relies on radical presence (“I am feeling anger right now, it is a normal physical sensation, and I am entirely safe”). We have to ReThink emotional expression not as a weapon that causes harm, but as an honest acknowledgment of what is actually happening inside you. Life becomes wonderful not because you never feel upset, but because you stop going to war with yourself when you do.

The Old Story: “My feelings are too much, too inconvenient, or too dangerous. If I want to be spiritual and keep the peace, I need to push them down and just be ‘fine’.”

The New Reality: “Before enlightenment, feelings arise. After enlightenment, feelings arise. I am dropping the illusion that my emotions are dangerous. I am choosing to experience my actual reality, exactly as it is.”

Your Turn: Identify your biggest “numbing” trigger right now (e.g., someone asks where you want to eat and you panic, your partner crosses a boundary and you instantly swallow your anger, feeling a wave of sadness and immediately turning on the TV to escape it).

  • Line 1 (My Numbing Trigger): ___________________________________________________________________
  • Line 2 (The “My Feelings Will Cause a Disaster” Story My Brain Made Up): ___________________________________________________________________
  • Line 3 (The Grounded Reality of What Actually Is): ___________________________________________________________________

Finding the Magic in the Mundane

The next time you catch yourself trying to transcend an uncomfortable emotion by disconnecting from your body, force your brain to look closely and identify reality.

Think of a recent time when you abandoned your own truth and pretended to be perfectly okay, just to keep someone else comfortable. How much energy did you waste managing a fake version of yourself?

Write an “Awakening Mantra” to keep handy when the frantic urge to shut down takes over. (e.g., “My feelings are data, not destruction,” or “I am safe to feel what is real right now.”)

A Final Thought: Awakening to What Is

You aren’t trying to generate a sterile, emotionally flat reality anymore.

The reality is, nothing really changes in the outer world. You are still going to experience frustration, grief, joy, and disappointment. People might be surprised when you finally start telling them how you really feel.

But when you finally drop the heavy backpack full of unexpressed truths and the exhausting demand that you must always be “fine,” you realize how incredibly wonderful it is to simply exist authentically.

The suffering vanishes. The ordinary becomes deeply extraordinary. Your capacity to pause, regulate your body, and aggressively challenge the story that your emotions are “wrong” is what actually brings you peace.

I’ll Meet You Where You Are.
